Trends in jewelry by Kia Shrutu

I have two loves when it comes to jewelry: Native American and Celtic. For some reason, I find the tribal styles of both of these cultures to be very fascinating but for different reasons. I like the complexity of Celtic knot work and the symbolism of intertwining worlds, but then I also enjoy the simple purity of Native American designs. Depending on my mood and what I'm wearing, either one usually completes my outfits nicely. In the past, gold was the sign of wealth and trendiness. However, more and more I see people of affluence turning, instead, to the silver tones of silver and platinum and white gold. While gold is still highly valuable, in my area of the country, wearing too much gold is considered tacky. A simple ring or thing gold chain might be acceptable, but heavy gold watches, gold chains and gold bracelets are becoming items most often worn by lower class people trying to appear wealthy. Too much gold is usually a sign of someone trying to appear richer than they really are. The most simple jewelry is becoming more fashionable, and silver is making a definite comeback. Plain silver bracelets, silver rings and chains, all of these are appearing in styles, and it is what I personally prefer. Silver compliments nearly any winter outfit, especially black gowns, while thin gold might compliment the more colorful styles of summer. Rather than loading down with gold jewelry, affluent people are opting instead for the "less is more" approach in silvers and platinums. Men are wearing a single, platinum watch studded with diamonds and perhaps a wedding band or a sports or university ring, but not much else. Women are wearing wedding bands of platinum, and perhaps one other ring of silver and simple silver bracelets and chains. My wedding gown for my upcoming wedding has a very antique look to it, being ivory instead of white and overlaid with a lace jacket and train. I plan to wear my grandmother's gold cameo, as gold sets off the dress' "old style" appeal. However, my wedding band and engagement band are of silver appearing white gold, and i will not be wearing any other jewelry. For my wedding party, my bridesmaids will be receiving simple silver bracelets.
